Lube Guide

Published by John on 20th Aug 2024

So many lubes, so many options to play with, let’s dive into the usage, some pros and cons, and recommendations of our favorite lubes.

1. Water-Based Lubricants

  • Description: The most common type, made primarily of water with added thickening agents.
  • Condom Compatibility: Safe for use with all types of condoms (latex, polyurethane, polyisoprene).
  • Toy Compatibility: Water based lubes are safe for most toys, including silicone, glass, and metal. However, avoid using with toys made from porous materials like jelly rubber or certain plastics as it can degrade them over time.
  • Pros: Easy to clean up, doesn't stain, readily available, and generally hypoallergenic.
  • Cons: Can dry out faster than other types, may require reapplication.
  • Pro Tip: Spit! Spit will help reinvigorate the lube once it starts drying up.

2. Silicone-Based Lubricants

  • Description: Made primarily of silicone, offering a silky and long-lasting glide.
  • Condom Compatibility: Safe for use with all types of condoms.
  • Toy Compatibility: Silicone lubricants are safe for most toys, including silicone. Avoid using with silicone toys if you intend to share them with others as the silicone in the lubricant can degrade the surface of silicone toys over time, creating microscopic abrasions that harbor bacteria.
  • Pros: Very slippery, long-lasting, doesn't get sticky, and generally hypoallergenic.
  • Cons: Can be difficult to clean up, may stain fabrics, and not recommended for use with silicone toys that will be shared.
  • Pro Tip: Dove Soap! Silicone lube can be washed off with most dishwashing soaps, but Dove soap seems to be the most effective on cleaning fabrics. Squirt a bit before your wash on the affected areas.

  • Description: Made from natural or synthetic oils, such as coconut oil, almond oil, or mineral oil.
  • Condom Compatibility: NOT safe for use with latex condoms as it can weaken the latex and cause breakage. Can be used with polyurethane condoms but may shorten their lifespan.
  • Toy Compatibility: Safe for most toys, except those made from porous materials or silicone.
  • Pros: Provides a natural feel, long-lasting lubrication.
  • Cons: Difficult to clean up, can stain fabrics, not compatible with latex condoms, and can degrade silicone toys over time.
  • Pro Tip: A little goes a long way. Preferred for Fisting and larger toys.

Remember:

  • Always read the product label carefully before using any lubricant.
  • If you're unsure about a lubricant's compatibility with a specific condom or toy, check with the manufacturer or choose a water-based option to be safe.
  • Before use on your sensitive bits, do a spot check on your arm to confirm no irritation. If you experience any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
